Review: Lightweight Brother ImageCenter ADS-1500W Offers On-the-Go Scanning
For the mobile user, a portable scanner used to be a luxury, but the Brother ImageCenter ADS-1500W makes it a viable option. This scanner not only boasts lightweight and impressive speed, but also delivers quality and features far beyond what its small frame and price tag would suggest.
Setup is a breeze. Just find a little desktop real estate for the ADS-1500W and power it up. The unit automatically finds available wireless networks and walks the user through the process of connecting on a 2.7-inch touch screen similar to smartphones and tablets.Additional connectivity options include two USB ports: a mini port for linking directly to a computer and a full-size port for scanning documents directly to a thumb drive; however, the ADS-1500W does not include an Ethernet port.
Once configured, the scanner becomes a pooled network resource that any computer in the office can use. Documents can be scanned automatically and sent via a POP3 email account, sent to an internal FTP server, saved on a local USB drive or even stored in the cloud using a service such as Dropbox. Requiring nothing other than a power plug and a wireless signal, this lightweight scanner is a convenient tool for traveling employees.
Managing the ADS-1500W is also relatively easy. Administrators can set defaults for such things as image resolution and automatic removal of blank pages. Users can then scan using those defaults or change them as needed.
The unit is fast too — able to scan two sides of a full-color document in a single pass and generally performing close to its 18-page-per-minute rating, though different page configurations sometimes slowed that pace. The Brother ImageCenter ADS-1500W would be an ideal choice for offices that have implemented a strong wireless backbone. For road warriors who require reliable, hassle-free scanning on the go, it’s easy to set up and use, and produces high-quality scans.
