Business Tool Sprawl: How IT Can Reduce Software Complexity
As organizations add software to solve specific business problems, their technology environments can become increasingly difficult to manage. Different teams may adopt overlapping applications, employees may gravitate toward tools they prefer, and new technologies can enter the organization faster than older ones are retired.
The result is business tool sprawl: an ecosystem in which organizations may be paying for redundant capabilities while employees move among applications that don't necessarily work well together.
What should organizations do? They should take a more intentional approach to evaluating the tools they use, says Erica Glende, a product marketing manager at Adobe.
“I think they need to go through an exercise and really evaluate each tool that they have and the business fit,” Glende says.
