Q&A: Android End of Life Accelerates the Windows 10 Countdown for Teams Room Devices

End of life for Windows 10 and older Android versions requires an update for Teams Rooms using these operating systems. Frazer Couzens, HP’s video collaboration lead, shares how to get started.

Microsoft has announced that the end of life for Windows 10 is Oct. 14, 2025. After this date, the company will no longer provide security patches or feature updates for this OS. Older versions of Android, including 10, 11 and 12, are also out of support; Android 12 was the most recent version, and security support ended March 3.

While EOL doesn’t mean these OSs suddenly stop working, it can create challenges for everyday work and cross-team collaboration. For example, Teams Rooms running Windows 10 has no support for multicamera viewing.

BizTech spoke with Frazer Couzens, Poly go-to-market video collaboration lead for HP, to explore what this all means for businesses.

FIND OUT: Why it's important to upgrade your video technology before Android 10's end of life deadline.

BIZTECH: With newer android and Windows versions readily available, why do so many organizations still rely on older Android models and Windows 10 for collaboration?

COUZENS: With the increase in hybrid work, users and organizations have come to depend on consistent, proven technology.

Meeting rooms help us collaborate, but the experience may vary between meeting rooms. Many organizations want to deploy modern meeting room technology to ensure high consistency and high reliability, but they have struggled to achieve this.

The traditional lifecycle for meeting rooms tends to be longer than an individual device lifecycle. As a result, the investment into collaboration technology has not been kept up to date.

BIZTECH: What does the end of support mean for companies using older Android versions or Windows 10 for Teams Rooms?

COUZENS: Though end-of-support dates differ for technology based on Windows 10 or Android systems on version 13 or lower, the result is much the same. It means that feature updates, software updates, security patches and technical support will no longer be offered after the announced date.

Microsoft Teams Rooms or Zoom Rooms based on Windows 10 must either update to Windows 11 or purchase a new, second-generation system by Oct. 14 to ensure they have support. And Microsoft Teams Rooms or Zoom Rooms based on Android version 13 or lower must upgrade by Sept. 3, 2027

BIZTECH: What are some of the core features that users benefit from with the latest Android or Windows versions?

COUZENS: Choosing to upgrade offers a variety of benefits. Users can use StudioNet and multicamera support; they will experience richer video, higher resolution, deeper zoom and snappier framing, and better audio processing.

BIZTECH: What are some challenges companies should expect with this upgrade?

COUZENS: With any transitions, project planning is required for switching your equipment. But ultimately, there are more challenges that come from using equipment past its end-of-support date than from investing in an upgrade.

HP Poly systems leverage similar mounts, software configurations within PolyOS and connection types to make the switch as easy as possible. IT leaders can also take advantage of HP's trade-in program
