Lenovo Paves the Way for a Sustainable Tech Future

Businesses reach environmental, social and governance goals faster with Lenovo’s sustainable solutions.

Sustainability is a top priority for organizations. According to KPMG’s Global Tech Report, 48% of survey respondents said that advancing their environmental, social and governance functions over the next two years is “a primary innovation goal for their technology functions.”

Lenovo has made significant strides in sustainable computing and devices, and the company’s hardware solutions are helping IT leaders achieve their ESG goals sooner. Here’s how:

A Full-Stack Approach to Sustainability

“Lenovo seeks to increase sustainability across as many product lines as possible over time, rather than consolidating sustainability features into one single device,” says Virginie Le Barbu, global sustainability director for international markets at Lenovo.

There are a few key components of this holistic approach, such as:

  • Participation in circular economies: Lenovo continues to integrate more sustainable materials into devices. “As of June 2024, Lenovo is integrating recycled content from IT products into 315 different product lines and has recycled or reused 94,000 metric tons of products from customers since 2020,” says Le Barbu. “That’s 87 million ThinkPads!”
  • Increasing energy efficiency: Improving efficiency and reducing emissions is key. “Lenovo is on track to achieve 50% improvement in energy efficiency for desktops and servers by March 31, 2030,” she says.
  • Improved packaging: Lenovo is also adopting packaging materials made from renewable resources such as sugar cane and bamboo, according to Le Barbu. These efforts have eliminated 54 tons of plastic tape from ThinkPad packaging annually.
  • Enhanced repairability: “The new ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 and T16 Gen 3 have been designed with repairability in mind,” she says. “This extends the product lifecycle, reduces electronic waste and offers cost-saving advantages for businesses and individuals.”

A Mission to Reduce, Repair and Recycle

Lenovo is committed to reducing power consumption, repairing devices and recycling post-consumer materials to help companies limit their e-waste.

By 2026, 100% of Lenovo’s PC products and tablets will contain post-consumer content. Plus, devices’ reduced power consumption paired with the ability to repair rather than replace them can help businesses lower both their energy consumption and technology spending, Le Barbu notes.

A Range of Sustainability Benefits

For IT leaders, sustainability can both improve infrastructure efficiency and support companywide ESG goals. “The decision to partner with key resellers such as CDW can help IT leaders in their own sustainability journey and support their sustainability goals,” says Le Barbu. “Lenovo is proud to collaborate with sustainability-focused channel partners to promote responsible procurement and responsible consumption.”

Metering solutions such as Lenovo TruScale also help companies build more energy-efficient data centers. Lenovo Neptune offers direct liquid cooling, circulating warm water through a copper loop to efficiently remove heat from CPUs and GPUs.

What’s Next for Sustainable Efforts?

Creating a sustainable future takes time, but Lenovo is committed to developing tech that allows businesses to meet their ESG goals.

“I am particularly excited about three solutions,” says Le Barbu. “The first is our Lenovo Certified Refurbished offerings, which allow enterprise customers to deploy high-quality, reliable and secure Lenovo Certified Refurbished PCs.”

UP NEXT: This tech helps businesses reduce their emissions.

“The second is our new ESG Navigator, which centralizes supply chain data management, improving optimization, accuracy and transparency,” she says. “It addresses ESG data management challenges, supporting both historic and future carbon emissions calculations.”

“And the third is the Lenovo 360 Sustainability Learning Paths. These will be open to Lenovo employees as well as all our channel partner employees,” Le Barbu says. “Learners will embark on a journey from sustainability fundamentals to understanding Lenovo’s ESG approach, and will develop skills to embed sustainability within their business practices.”

In these ways, Lenovo is helping businesses make smarter, more sustainable tech investments.
