When you picture a workplace, what do you see? For some, it’s the traditional office, complete with coworkers and conference rooms. For others, it’s a home office down the hall from their bedroom. And for still others, it’s an airport, hotel room, customer site or anywhere else they open their laptop. No longer confined to four walls, today’s workplaces are anywhere someone does a job.
Enterprises have had on-the-go employees forever, from top executives to sales professionals. The pandemic made clear that remote-friendly policies were possible on a wider scale, and even as more organizations pursue return-to-office strategies, the idea that everyone will be onsite every day seems passé. Not only do hybrid workplaces reduce the amount of expensive commercial real estate businesses need, but they also allow businesses to hire top talent regardless of location.
Still, culture, efficiency and collaboration matter too, and there’s no doubt that those things are more challenging to build and maintain today. What’s needed is the right mix of technology to support all the crucial elements of the modern workplace: teamwork, productivity and flexibility.

What Are the Three Pillars of a Modern Workplace?
Artificial intelligence is proving to be a huge boon to each of the of the first two pillars. The commercial real estate giant JLL learned that as it shifted its management from a regional approach to a global one. The company standardized on Microsoft 365 workplace applications and the Microsoft Teams collaboration platform, making use of its Copilot AI tool along the way.
The results have been stark, says JLL Global CIO George Thomas: “If you have to drive a common set of processes and a common culture in the organization, having a collaboration suite of products that are the same across the company is table stakes.” The global tire manufacturer Michelin is likewise leveraging AI to help its own teams drive greater output.
The flexibility to work from anywhere is made possible by a range of technology, from mobile endpoint devices and secure network setups to well-equipped conference rooms that support seamless meeting experiences for all participants.
The future of work will be built on platforms that are intelligent, inclusive and adaptable.
