A Visual History of The Mobile Phone

Evolving over 30 years, phones have become the smaller, cheaper, feature-rich creature we all know and love.

When you step back and look at the history of cell phones, it’s hard not to be impressed by the leaps that have been made in hardware, software and telecommunications.

The cell phone started out back in 1982 with the clunky Motorola DynaTac 8000X. This hefty brick device was made popular in part by its appearance in the hit teen sitcom Saved by the Bell, which earned it the nickname the Zack Morris phone. When it launched, the DynaTac cost nearly $4,000 and boasted only an hour of battery life. And you thought your smartphone — with its Wi-Fi connectivity, video recording, GPS navigation and e-mail — had poor battery life.
