That’s a<strong> big mistake</strong>. While revising documentation is nobody’s idea of a good time, an outdated plan is rarely useful to anyone. IT security professionals should <strong>revisit their plans regularly</strong> to ensure that they’re ready to meet their organizations’ needs based upon their current operating environment and the modern threat landscape.</p> <p>Incident response plans are often first created to check a box — perhaps there’s an upcoming technology audit, or you’re certifying against a new security standard or seeking to comply with a new regulation. Whatever the impetus, technology leaders often pull together the first version of an incident response plan in a hurry to meet a deadline, then put it back on the shelf to gather dust.</p> <p>That approach might fulfill an immediate need, but the plan certainly isn’t a useful tool to help guide an organization when an incident occurs. A well-designed incident response plan serves a much more important purpose: It brings the calm, collected environment of the planning room into the chaos of a security incident. Here are five things organizations can look for as they seek to <strong>revitalize their organizations’ incident response plans</strong>.</p> <p> </p> <p><a data-entity-type="" data-entity-uuid="" href="https://www.cdw.com/content/cdw/en/orchestration/cyber-security-report.html" target="_blank"><img alt="CDW Cybersecurity Insight Report " data-entity-type="" data-entity-uuid="" src="/sites/statetechmagazine.com/files/Cybersecurity_IR_stayprotected_700x220%20(2).jpg" /></a></p> <h2 id="toc_0">1. Identify Critical Systems and Information</h2> <p>One of the most important components of an incident response plan is a listing of the systems and information that are critical to business operations. This asset list serves as an important tool to prioritize incident response efforts by <strong>strengthening protections around those systems</strong> and restoring them first in the event of a service disruption.</p> <p>Business circumstances change over time, and the critical asset inventory will too. It isn’t reasonable to assume that the list of vital assets developed when the response plan was first written is still valid today. Security pros should take the time to validate this asset list and determine whether the organization’s current business environment warrants adding or removing items from the inventory.</p> <h2 id="toc_1">2. Update Threat-Specific Responses</h2> <p>Just as a business evolves over time, so does the threat landscape. Researchers discover new vulnerabilities, attackers develop <strong>new tactics and security controls mitigate risks</strong> in different ways. An incident response plan update should include some thought into how changes in the external threat environment might impact the plan.</p> <p>Consider how effective the plan would be in covering the types of incidents that are occurring at other organizations. For example, ransomware attacks have increased dramatically over the past year. While it might make sense to treat this threat as similar to other malware threats from a prevention standpoint, ransomware raises new questions from an incident response perspective: If such an attack occurs, will the organization consider paying the ransom? If so, under what circumstances? Consider an Incident Response Retainer</h2> <p>Responding to a security incident requires skill and expertise in the discipline of incident response as well as in the specific technical domains impacted by the incident. Some organizations have at least one IT team member dedicated to incident response, but many smaller businesses can’t do that.</p> <p>Even those that can may benefit from outside expertise. And it’s best to <strong>have that help on retainer long before an incident occurs</strong>, as it’s very difficult to bring an incident response consultant into an ongoing attack when no prior relationship exists.</p> <p>A response plan revision is a good time to consider entering into a retainer agreement with a consultant. This allows the business to get the contractual arrangements out of the way and establish technical and management contacts to facilitate the rapid deployment of expertise should it become necessary during an incident.</p> <h2 id="toc_3">4. Keep the Contact List Current</h2> <p>Incident response efforts involve contacting a lot of people. Responders will need to activate internal escalation procedures to call in team members and notify management. They may need to contact vendors specializing in incident response or certain critical business applications. It may be necessary to call in law enforcement to assist with a criminal investigation. A response plan revision should include an update of the organization’s contact list: <strong>Make sure that all the contact information for critical vendors is current</strong>. The last thing anyone wants to discover during a crisis is that a key contact left their position six months ago and someone new must be brought up to speed.</p> <h2 id="toc_4">5. Incorporate Lessons Learned into New Plan Iterations</h2> <p>There’s an old adage among military tacticians: “<strong>No plan survives first contact with the enemy</strong>.” That sentiment certainly holds true when it comes to cybersecurity incident response. No matter how robust the plan seems when first designed, surprises are inevitable, as are situations where the plan, as written, doesn’t seem like the best course of action.</p> <p>That’s when incident response teams must exercise their professional judgment — and there’s great wisdom in that judgment. In the days after every incident response, the security team should take some time to walk through the response effort and identify places where they were forced to deviate from the plan. Were those events shortcomings in the plan or one-off abnormalities? Does it make sense to modify the plan based upon recent experiences? This iterative process will <strong>make the plan stronger</strong> each time it is executed.</p> <p>Incident response plans play a vital role in helping organizations through the chaos and confusion of a security breach. In fact, their popularity is rising. According to a <a href="https://www.mimecast.com/globalassets/documents/ebook/stateemailsecurity-2018.pdf" target="_blank">recent report</a> by Mimecast,<strong> 90 percent </strong>of organizations saw the number of phishing attacks increase or plateau in the past year. And it’s not just lower-level employees under attack; <a href="https://biztechmagazine.com/article/2018/10/cyberattacks-target-c-suite-rise">email-based attacks that target the C-suite</a> — known as whaling — are also on the rise.</p> <p>“We believe there has been a recent uptick in whaling scams aimed at businesses, and we want to warn companies to alert their employees about this potential fraud,” Katherine Hutt, communications director for the Council of Better Business Bureaus, said <a href="https://www.prweb.com/releases/bbb_business_tip_avoid_whaling_and_ceo_impersonation_scams/prweb15686544.htm" target="_blank">in a recent statement</a>.</p> <p>Many businesses think a spam filter is all they need to protect themselves. Some banks and credit unions operate under that misconception too, and that’s especially dangerous because their assets and employees are among hackers’ most desirable targets.</p> <p>In December, for instance, researchers <a href="https://www.menlosecurity.com/blog/a-jar-full-of-problems-for-financial-services-companies" target="_blank">from Menlo Labs</a> revealed a new business email campaign targeted financial companies and spread malware through Google cloud storage.</p> <p><a data-entity-type="" data-entity-uuid="" href="https://www.cdw.com/content/cdw/en/orchestration/cyber-security-report.html" target="_blank" title="CDW Cybersecurity Insight Report"><img alt="Cybersecurity-report_EasyTarget.jpg" data-entity-type="" data-entity-uuid="" src="/sites/biztechmagazine.com/files/uploads/Cybersecurity-report_EasyTarget.jpg" /></a></p> <h2>4 Tips to Improve Email Security for Financial Firms</h2> <p>So, what can financial firms do to keep their email secure?</p> <p>In a <a href="https://biztechmagazine.com/article/2018/03/4-tactics-to-enhance-your-businesss-email-security">recent article for <em>BizTech</em></a>, Karen Scarfone, principal consultant for Scarfone Cybersecurity, spelled out four ways businesses can improve this aspect of their security strategy:</p> <p><strong>1. Protect Vulnerable Sessions: </strong>When email client software establishes a session with a server, often it isn’t protected. There are two options to ensure these sessions are encrypted: “Transport Layer Security (formerly known as <a href="https://biztechmagazine.com/article/2017/06/http-vs-https-debate-over-only-one-helps-keep-your-business-safe-cybercrime">Secure Sockets Layer</a>), protects all sessions using email protocols, including IMAP, POP and SMTP. Second, using a web-based email serv­ice instead of locally installed email client software ensures TLS will protect the web traffic,” writes Scarfone, noting that both options also require strong passwords and multifactor authentication.</p> <p><strong>2. Check Out Modern Anti-Malware:</strong> Threats are evolving, sometimes faster than malware can keep up, especially because traditional solutions depend on known patterns or signatures to detect malicious actors. <a href="https://biztechmagazine.com/article/2018/12/cyberthreats-evolve-next-generation-solutions-prove-critical-security">New malware solutions</a>, however, incorporate artificial intelligence or other tools that can detect even unknown threats and help companies stay one step ahead.</p> <p><strong>3. Monitor the Health of All Email Client Devices:</strong> “Automated health checks can flag problematic email accounts and identify emerging security problems — such as end-user systems that use weak security settings or lack OS and email client software patches — and hasten corrective action by the IT team,” notes Scarfone.</p> <p><strong>4. Incorporate Data Loss Prevention Tools:</strong> Often, malicious actors tap email accounts to forward sensitive info outside the company. Data loss prevention tools monitor, detect and stop these threats.</p> <p>Beyond tools, one last important aspect of keeping your financial firm safe from email attacks is education. If employees don’t know what a malicious email attack looks like, how can they respond appropriately it? Specifically, surveillance data can be used to tap insights into how retail stores operate and how they can create efficiencies.</p> <p><a href="https://www.cdw.com/content/cdw/en/solutions/networking/internet-of-things/iot-workshop.html" target="_blank"><em><strong>LEARN MORE:</strong> Check out how CDW's IoT Envisioning workshop can help you accelerate digital transformation.</em></a></p> <h2>3 Ways Surveillance Data Can Enhance Retail Operations</h2> <p>While most of the futuristic identification capabilities we see on crime shows aren’t possible yet with even the most advanced camera systems, basic information gleaned from video, like where shoppers are located in a store, can <strong>help brands to extrapolate insights</strong> that can build efficiencies and solve problems.</p> <p>“Knowing where people are, where they go, and doing that in real time can be <strong>applied to a whole host of business problems</strong>,” said Bentinck. For example, if a person or group of people appear to be waiting for something, the technology could give brands the capability to notify an associate who may otherwise remain unaware of the need.</p> <p>But the possibilities don’t end there. CDW’s Howard offered <strong>three more ways</strong> that surveillance data can enhance retail operations:</p> <p><strong>1. Hindsight:</strong> This is typically what video already offers retail, the capability to catch the bad guy after he’s been in the store. But hindsight can also be put to use on understanding the current state of the store and what areas could use operational improvement.</p> <p><strong>2. Insight:</strong> By better understanding exactly what has happened and how operations are running within a location, insight can drive improvements. “With the proper tools and analytics … we can continue with insight, what’s going on today,” Howard noted.</p> <p><strong>3. Foresight:</strong> With the right tools and integration, surveillance data can also translate to predictive analysis that can help brands forecast how customers might react to changes and improvements, and find ways to carve out opportunity. “Where are they going? What are they looking for? What are they going to buy? What’s the potential?” asked Howard.</p> <p>The most important element of these insights, however, is that they’re <strong>derived from tools that are already in the store</strong>, leveraging an otherwise largely unused infrastructure.</p> <p>“All of these are available with the same tool, not a lot of other tools, not a huge infrastructure, but a simple tool,” said Howard.</p> <p><a href="https://biztechmagazine.com/nrf-2019-retails-big-show">Keep this page bookmarked</a> for articles from the event. 09:50</span> <div><p>As consumers become more comfortable using their smartphones for everything from dating to shopping, <strong>mobile</strong><strong> web continues on a steep incline</strong>.</p> <p>“Mobile [web traffic] today accounts for over 30 percent of all revenue,” noted Peter Sheldon, the senior director of strategy at Magento, an <a href="https://www.cdw.com/content/cdw/en/brand/adobe.html" target="_blank">Adobe</a> company, during a presentation at <a href="https://biztechmagazine.com/nrf-2019-retails-big-show">NRF 2019: Retail’s Big Show</a> in New York City on Monday, Jan. 14.<strong> “The opportunity for [mobile commerce] is here now, and that shift from desktop to mobile is accelerating.”</strong></p> <p><a href="https://twitter.com/BizTechMagazine" target="_blank"><strong><em>JOIN THE CONVERSATION:</em></strong><em> Follow @BizTechMagazine on Twitter for continued NRF 2019 coverage.</em></a></p> <p>But the mobile experience is far from perfect, something retailers must reckon with because, <strong>as mobile use grows, the expectations for what mobile retail sites can deliver has also grown,</strong> particularly when it comes to speed. In this day and age, shoppers have little patience for slow websites: As sites take longer to load, <a href="https://www.section.io/blog/page-load-time-bounce-rate/" target="_blank">bounce rates rise and dwell times fall</a> significantly. This can leave sales on the table when it comes to e-commerce, as slow sites mean less engaged shoppers.</p> <p>While improving mobile site speeds may seem like strictly an IT problem, it’s an issue that often runs much deeper.</p> <p><strong>“Performance is not just an engineering problem</strong> — in a lot of organizations, it’s an organizational problem,” said Christopher Sater, strategic partner development manager at <a href="https://www.cdw.com/content/cdw/en/brand/google-interstitial.html.html" target="_blank">Google</a>. When performance is relegated to a few engineers, it’s usually not enough to combat the problem and can often make it worse.</p> <p>“The most successful web retailers today have cross-functional teams that are taking responsibility for the web experience, including performance,” said Sater.</p> <h2>4 Tips Drive Improvements in the Mobile Web Experience</h2> <p>So, as user expectations rise for mobile web, how can retailers build a framework for improvement throughout their organization? Sater offered four tips to help brands do just that:</p> <ol><li><strong>Focus on the user:</strong> E-commerce might be complicated, but a brand’s users don’t need to know that. “[A retailer’s] job is to understand your users’ goals and help them get there more quickly,” said Sater.</li> <li><strong>Strive to connect every step of the way:</strong> Engage with shoppers on all stages of the shopping journey, and on every device.</li> <li><strong>Remove friction:</strong> Reducing pain points or areas where users can easily move away from the experience will likely drive them to act.</li> <li><strong>Make the customer experience everyone’s responsibility:</strong> Holding everyone in the organization accountable for the user experience on the web will help to accelerate both connecting with the customer and removing friction, Sater noted.</li> </ol><p><a href="https://biztechmagazine.com/nrf-2019-retails-big-show">Keep this page bookmarked</a> for articles from the event. Burger King took advantage of analytics with the launch of their new app by tapping geolocation data from users’ phones and sending coupons to customers that offered Whoppers for a penny if they were within <strong>600 feet </strong>of a McDonalds.</p> <h2>Chick-fil-A Puts Data Visualization Dashboards to Work</h2> <p>Chick-fil-A has been using data and performance reporting to get ahead since 1999, when the data team created reporting documents manually, using <a href="https://www.cdw.com/content/cdw/en/brand/microsoft.html" target="_blank">Microsoft</a> Access and Excel, that included financial information for every restaurant, region and the company as a whole. At the time, “this was a game changer,” said Hinson.</p> <p>Eventually, however, this type of reporting, though valuable, became cumbersome. “It would take at least a full day of work every month,” said Hinson, adding that while the reports were data rich, they lacked analytics that could necessarily make that data useful.</p> <p>This inefficiency extended to annual reports as well, which <strong>took more than a month to create</strong> and were expensive and inefficient to produce.</p> <p>The answer to the brand’s data woes was<a href="https://www.cdw.com/product/tableau-desktop-pro-lic/3678930" target="_blank"> Tableau</a>, an analytics dashboard that automates the steps needed to generate reports and update dashboards to get information into the hands of those who need it, whenever they need it, said Hinson.</p> <p>“<strong>Users can filter data quickly</strong> and customize the data so that they see exactly the data they are interested in, every time they log in,” said Hinson, noting that the new dashboards are available to all staff and pull several new dimensions of data.</p> <p>“This has become the most popular dashboard on our server,” said Hinson. “It’s kept up to date automatically … It not only provides useful information to help us keep a pulse on the business, but the data is presented in a way that the users find engaging.”</p> <p>Further, using Tableau, Chick-fil-A can build their annual report themselves in a <strong>fraction of the time</strong> it used to take. “It looks just the same as the old annual report, but not only does it send the report to executives as a PDF, it also allows them to log in to the data so they can play with it,” said Hinson.</p> <p>Moreover, this data is already at work in Chick-fil-A locations. The Home Depot has also seen a major boost to its organization since adopting the Tableau dashboard for its <a href="http://ir.homedepot.com/news-releases/2014/01-23-2014-014522229">recent acquisition of Blinds.com</a>.</p> <p>To help cut down on friction and better understand blind spots in its process, The Home Depot built out a <strong>robust self-serve Tableau environment for its data</strong>. This allowed the company to visualize its current environment, as well as move forward with predictive analytics that could help to prevent problems in the future.</p> <p>In particular, the company was seeing remakes — the need to remake a product that had shipped to the customer either damaged or with the incorrect dimensions — eat into its top-line revenue, and wanted to find a way to better understand and prevent this from happening.</p> <p>“Remakes can cost upward of 6 percent of top-line revenue. So anything we can do to prevent that from happening is powerful for the business,” said Chase Zieman, director of analytics and data science for Global Custom Commerce, an innovation hub within The Home Depot, during a separate session at NRF 2019.</p> <p>Overall, Zieman credits the technology with <strong>saving more than $1 million in sales</strong> costs in 2018, and with building better insights with vendors who otherwise wouldn’t have access to the data available via Tableau.</p> <p>“This is really powerful for our organization, to really combat some of our remake costs as well as for forecasting for future sales.
