And the city has become a leader in deploying smart technology as a way of mitigating those problems.

For example, Las Vegas has gone beyond testing to deploy driverless vehicles in the field. “Our autonomous shuttle is traversing the streets right now,” said Michael Sherwood, the city’s director of IT and innovation. “It’s the first of its kind in the United States, and we’re looking at expanding that type of transportation around the city.”

But it’s not stopping with robot buses. The city has deployed an army of sensor technology that gathers data on everything from weather and air quality to public safety and traffic.

Sherwood, speaking as part of a panel on smart city technology at Cisco Live 2018 in Orlando, Fla., said officials have been thinking a lot lately about how to make the best use of the data those sensors are delivering and what kinds of new data the city might need.

For example, the city’s intersections can be dangerous places — at all times they teem with tourists who may not be using their best judgment. So Las Vegas officials are studying whether they can make intersections safer with smart technology. Can sensors detect when a pedestrian has entered an intersection unsafely and deliver some kind of warning? Can they redesign the intersections themselves?

They’re not sure yet, but they’re studying data on near-misses to understand why accidents happen.

“How do we use that near-miss data to change the way intersections are designed and built, and how do we use that intelligence to take remediation steps?” Sherwood said. “Whether it’s a child going to school or one of our visitors or citizens downtown, we really want to understand how we can prevent accidents.”

SIGN UP: Get more news from the BizTech newsletter in your inbox every two weeks!

How Smart City Solutions Make Life Easier

Of course, not every application of smart city technology has life-and-death implications. Most often, cities use the technology to make citizens’ lives more convenient.

In Cary, N.C., town leaders are using sensors at the community center parking lot to gather data on parking space usage. The government’s goal is to better understand its citizens’ parking needs as it prepares to build a new parking garage as part of a downtown redevelopment project.

“So working with Cisco, we had the idea of ‘Hey, let’s use our campus as a kind of laboratory,’” said Nicole Raimundo, CIO for the town of 162,000. “We said, ‘How can we look at what our needs are for this garage before we build it?’ We installed sensors in our parking lot and got a lot of great data from that. For example, we found that a lot of people were using the electric vehicle parking spots, so we know that’s a big trend that we need to consider.”

Both Las Vegas and Cary use Cisco Kinetic for Cities, a data management platform that compiles and analyzes sensor data and displays it on a dashboard so city managers can make informed decisions. Sherwood said the platform is crucial to his town’s deployment of smart city technology. “It’s really a view into our city in real time, giving us air quality, public safety data, environmental stats. It’s the foundation for everything — the nerve center of all the sensor data that’s coming in.”

Town leaders in Cary are considering more ways to deploy technology to improve citizens’ lives. For example, they’re studying a project on how to mitigate traffic problems when a signal malfunctions.

“Our vision is that as soon as that happens it sends out a work order automatically and streams the video to our 311 center so they can see what’s going on,” Raimundo said. “It can also reroute traffic via Waze. So, our vision with technology is not that people see it or even notice it, it’ll just happen.”

Read articles and check out videos from BizTech coverage of Cisco Live 2018 here.

Bob Keaveney

Fri, 15 Jun 2018 16:13:33 +0000 phil.goldstein_6191 41446 at https://biztechmagazine.com Cisco Live 2018: How to Create an IT Culture That Empowers Everyone https://biztechmagazine.com/media/video/cisco-live-2018-how-create-it-culture-empowers-everyone Cisco Live 2018: How to Create an IT Culture That Empowers Everyone

It’s no secret that historically, women have been underrepresented in the technology industry. Women need strong mentors and sponsors who can give them the opportunities to succeed, and should be treated as full members of any team. At Cisco Live 2018, we spoke with a variety of executives and industry leaders about how organizations can create a culture that empowers all employees, regardless of gender.

For more highlights and news from Cisco Live, check out our Cisco Live 2018 conference coverage page.

phil.goldstein_6191 Fri, 06/15/2018 - 10:01

Tweet text

The idea that women need to overcome a skills gap in #IT is a myth. At least that's what Cisco thinks. The company's intent-based networking paradigm promises to offer organizations greater flexibility in how they operate both their networks and data centers. The platform gives them new flexibility by having business intent and needs drive the functions of their IT infrastructure. We spoke with experts from Cisco and CDW at Cisco Live 2018 about how intent-based networking is changing the business landscape.

For more highlights and news from Cisco Live, check out our Cisco Live 2018 conference coverage page.

phil.goldstein_6191 Thu, 06/14/2018 - 10:19

Tweet text

How will @Cisco's intent-based networking change businesses' IT architecture? And Gartner predicts that by 2020, a quarter of customer service operations will use virtual customer assistants.

But virtual customer assistants (such as Bank of America’s Erica, which the bank widely rolled out to its 25 million mobile customers in May) are just one of many ways banks use AI to enhance the customer experience. Banks can use artificial intelligence to identify fraud and cybersecurity risks and provide more personalized services.

Ultimately, AI for banks boils down to being able to make more intelligent decisions based on the data the bank already has about its customers, which in turn leads to better service.

SIGN UP: Get more news from the BizTech newsletter in your inbox every two weeks!

How Banks Can Use AI to Help Customers

Much of the discussion around AI in banking has focused on whether or how much the technology will replace human jobs by automating routine tasks. However, banks should take a wider view of AI and realize it can help customers in numerous ways.

For example, AI can help detect fraud in real time since machine learning algorithms are likely able to spot patterns of suspicious behavior faster than a human can. The faster fraud is detected, the more quickly customers can be alerted.

Many banks are either already using AI in this way or are starting to explore it. Citibank, through its Citi Ventures arm, has made a strategic investment in Feedzai, a data science company focused on real-time fraud detection, according to Tech Emergence.

HSBC is teaming with a U.K.-based startup, Quantexa, to use AI to spot money laundering activity in customer networks, CIO Dive reports.

The same pattern recognition tools used to spot fraudulent activities can also be used to detect patterns of customer activity and recommend products and services based on them. For example, if the bank detects that a customer has made transactions at stores that sell baby products and also has been paying for visits to an OB-GYN, the bank might reasonably conclude that the customer will soon become a parent. Then, the bank can offer the client life insurance or a 529 plan for college savings, which the customer might not have known about.

And, of course, banks can use voice-activated AI for virtual assistants that can make transactions smoother and easier for customers. For example, Bank of America says Erica can search past transactions, such as checks or shopping activity; access key information, such as routing numbers or the closest ATM; schedule face-to-face meetings at a branch; view bills and schedule payments; lock and unlock debit cards; and transfer money between accounts or send money to friends with Zelle, a digital payments network.

AI for Banks Requires a Data Strategy

Ultimately, AI enables banks to pull structured and unstructured data from disparate sources, including external sources, and identify problems and solutions much faster than humans can. Platforms such as IBM Watson allow banks to do this with ease. For example, IBM notes, Watson adds a cybersecurity threat insight engine to the company’s cybersecurity platform, QRadar Security Analytics Platform, helping customers analyze threats up to 50 percent faster.

Banks can and should invest in AI where it makes sense for them to do so. But to take full advantage of such solutions, they need to develop a comprehensive data strategy that allows them to identify and link as many data sources as possible. Banks need to securely store and inventory their data and then determine how best to link it via AI software, so that they can get the most valuable insights and deliver the best service to customers.

This article is part of BizTech's EquITy blog series. For the team and its fans, the game was more than just a home opener, it was the first day they would spend together at SunTrust Park, the centerpiece of a $1.1 billion megaproject that was years in the making and included the stadium and a large mixed-use development called the Battery Atlanta.

For Greg Gatti, CIO of the Braves, it was the culmination of years of grueling work — and a chance to breathe a big sigh of relief.

“I had a somewhat selfish perspective,” Gatti recalled this week. “It was: ‘OK, how do we make sure that Greg doesn’t get fired before Opening Day or immediately thereafter?’”

He did not get fired. On the contrary, the project has been lauded as a huge success. “We’ve had over 100 teams come visit SunTrust Park and the Battery Atlanta. We really are that new model.”

Gatti described the club’s vision for the project, the technology it deployed to see the vision through and the results so far to attendees of Cisco Live 2018 in Orlando, Fla., this week.

SIGN UP: Get more news from the BizTech newsletter in your inbox every two weeks!

SunTrust Park, The Battery Atlanta Were Massive Tech Undertakings

From the beginning, it was clear the project would not just be another new ballpark. In addition to the stadium, the Braves would be building 1.5 million square feet of homes, retail shops, office buildings and restaurants around SunTrust Park. The Battery Atlanta is also home to a 4,000-seat music venue and a four-star hotel.

The club was attempting to create an atmosphere that was the very opposite of Turner Field, its previous home.

“At Turner Field, we had 81 games and the rest of the time no one was there,” Gatti said. “No one came early, no one stayed late and the rest of the time not much was going on. So we wanted to build a 365-day-a-year destination that fans would want to come to all year round. Our vision was to build a unique live-work-play environment.”

But the technology undertaking necessary to bring that vision to life was daunting. Gatti and the Braves also had a vision for what they wanted their technology to do.

Their vision included a one-network concept, in which everything — the club’s back-office network; the Wi-Fi in the ballpark and the Battery; the networks used to manage the sprinklers, lights and other ballpark operations; and all third-party service providers, from the food vendors to parking attendants — would run on a single network.

This idea was novel, Gatti said. Traditional stadiums have separate networks for the team and its various vendors. And of course, no one had ever attempted to push Wi-Fi and other technical resources out from a stadium to a surrounding community.

“We wanted everything to run on our network so we would have full visibility and make sure it was secure, and that it scaled and was available to fans,” he explained. “So we had a massive tech environment to deliver.”

Technology as a Revenue Driver

They also wanted the technology, which made up 12.5 percent of the project budget, to be a source of revenue. The stadium television network at Turner Field showed the game but wasn’t monetized with advertising. The club wanted to change that — not just in SunTrust Park, but around it.

Today there are about 1,350 screens, including some double-sided touch-screen kiosks that feature wayfinding applications, throughout the stadium and the Battery, all of it powered by Cisco Vision dynamic signage technology.

“Cisco showed us all the different capabilities we could have with Cisco Vision, and that really opened our eyes because we were used to what we had at Turner Field,” Gatti said. “They also led a series of meetings rolling into Opening Day to help develop and deploy that content and make sure that we had something we could market from an ad standpoint.”

Today, he said, the team considers itself a digital marketing company in addition to a ballclub, and it has the seven-figure ad revenue to prove it.

The club deployed a comprehensive suite of Cisco products and services, including Nexus 7718 core switches and Catalyst 3850 series access switches, enterprise-class LAN and WAN, Cisco’s Identity Services Engine and Umbrella security products as well as its ASA 9300 firewall, an IP phone system with Unified Contact Center, and Cisco Vision. The club also used a number of services, including Cisco’s advanced design and content development services.

In the end, Gatti said the network is unparalleled by anything else in sports. Its Wi-Fi network, for example, is “the fastest Wi-Fi you’ve ever been on. We will give you all the bandwidth your device can handle with no restrictions.” Yet despite its technical sophistication, the network is simple enough for his 18-member IT team to manage.

Most importantly, he said, the network is now the heart of a transformed business.

“We went from being a ballclub to being a technology-driven landlord, development and marketing company,” he said.

Read articles and check out videos from BizTech coverage of Cisco Live 2018 here.

Bob Keaveney

Thu, 14 Jun 2018 00:05:31 +0000 Bob.Keaveney_u64t 41421 at https://biztechmagazine.com Cisco Live 2018: Need More Talent in Your IT Department? When they tell her they’d like to speak with the dean, they’re often surprised to learn they’re already speaking with her.

“They’re calling the engineering dean and they assume the engineering dean is a man,” Carpenter said. “So when they hear a woman’s voice, they assume I’m the secretary. I’ll tell you, this happens to me on a near-daily basis.”

It’s an example of the kind of implicit bias that many people carry without even realizing it, she told attendees of Cisco Live 2018. It can inevitably wend its way into the cultures of even well-meaning companies, especially in the male-dominated technology fields, creating atmospheres where women don’t feel supported — and don’t stick around.

Recruiting and retaining women is a problem for talent-starved technology departments in companies of every size, and it’s likely to get bigger as the professional workforce changes over time. For companies to compete, building a more diverse technology workforce is not just the right thing to do, it’s a business imperative, Carpenter said.

SIGN UP: Get more news from the BizTech newsletter in your inbox every two weeks!

The Demographics of the Workforce Are Changing Fast

The reason is demographics. After 20 years of steady increase in the number of Americans graduating high school, that number has begun declining as millennials enter the workforce.

Over the next few years, the pool of newly graduated candidates ready to enter tech jobs will become shallower. Also, a much higher percentage of those candidates will be women, as they increasingly outpace men in both entering and graduating from college.

Talent is a numbers game, Carpenter said, and the numbers don’t favor companies whose technology departments can’t find ways to attract and retain women.

Women hold only 24 percent of all science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs in the United States, even though they comprise 47 percent of the overall workforce, according to the Commerce Department. Women also make up only about 30 percent of all STEM degree-holders and are less likely than male STEM degree-holders to get a job in the field.

Carpenter said research into women who hold STEM degrees, but didn’t enter the field, found that a full 33 percent said that their exposure to the industry led them to conclude the culture is inflexible or unsupportive of women.

Among women who did enter a STEM-related job but left, half cited working conditions that were too grueling or offered little advancement opportunity, while one-third cited workplace cultures that were hostile or unsupportive.

“All that Silicon Valley ‘bro’ culture, that just drives women away,” she said.

How to Attract and Retain Women in Technology

Carpenter noted that companies seeking to attract more women to their technology workforces need to pay careful attention to the unique expectations of millennials. That’s because millennials comprise about half the workforce already and will make up about 75 percent by 2025. Women also represent a higher percentage of professional millennials.

Millennials are demanding a much different kind of working experience than their parents and grandparents encountered. They place greater value on work-life balance, and they insist on having a job where they feel like they’re making an impact — and quickly.

“Millennials aren’t willing to spend five years working somewhere to prove themselves to some baby boomer in order to do something important,” Carpenter said. “They will leave. They’re willing to say sayonara to that six-figure income if they don’t like the culture. I’m a child of Depression-era parents. That makes no sense to me. But it’s how they feel.”

They’re also deeply committed to working for companies that share their values. When word got out that Google had signed a contract with the Defense Department to conduct artificial intelligence work, about 4,000 employees signed a petition denouncing the deal, and Google agreed not to renew it.

Carpenter also advised that companies broaden their recruiting efforts by reaching out to professional societies catering to women and other underrepresented groups and by visiting a wider array of universities, including small schools.

“You don’t have to go to a big school to find great talent,” she said. “There are lots of resources for talent. If you keep looking in the same places, you’re gonna keep finding the same thing.”

Read articles and check out videos from BizTech coverage of Cisco Live 2018 here.

Bob Keaveney

Wed, 13 Jun 2018 21:28:19 +0000 Bob.Keaveney_u64t 41416 at https://biztechmagazine.com Cisco Live 2018: Fact Vs.
