VMworld 2017 to Focus on the Cross-Cloud Future

VMware’s premier conference will take place later this month, and will likely highlight how the company wants to help businesses operating across multiple clouds.

We’re living in a multicloud world, in which businesses use public cloud storage, private clouds for sensitive data and all manner of hybrid cloud environments that combine private and public elements.

VMware sits at the center of that hybrid cloud world, and its vision for how businesses can take advantage of and best use multiple clouds will be on display later this month at the VMworld 2017 conference, which the BizTech team will cover from Aug. 27-31 in Las Vegas.

What should attendees expect? VMware used last year’s conference to unveil its Cross-Cloud Architecture, promising companies greater flexibility to run applications in a common operating environment across both private and multiple public cloud services. Expect to hear more about the progress on that.

“This year, we'll be showing the fruits of our cross-cloud labor and showcasing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)-based cross-cloud management, networking and security,” Chris Wolf, VMware's CTO, global field and industry, says in Virtualization Review. “As we demonstrated last year, we've kept our focus on the top challenges facing organizations running their businesses across multiple and often competing clouds. That includes centralized network operations and security policies, cost management, and discovery, among other key capabilities.”

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger and Sanjay Poonen, COO of customer operations, will kick things off Aug. 28 with the opening keynote, where they are expected to discuss VMware’s major announcements for the show and the company’s vision for cloud, mobility, networking and security. On Aug. 29, Gelsinger and CTO Ray O’Farrell will use a keynote to “dive deeper into the reality of how a fictional company successfully transforms from industry laggard to industry leader by embracing VMware, partner and open-source technologies from the cloud to the edge.”

The conference will have seven tracks for sessions: modernize the data center; application transformation; emerging technologies and trends (think Internet of Things and AirWatch’s evolving role in enterprise mobility); integrate public clouds; empower the digital workspace; transform security; and leading digital transformation. Oh, and don’t forget, rock band Blink-182 will be playing at the conference’s customer appreciation event Aug. 30.
