While some might have labeled 2013 the "lost year in tech," we witnessed significant progresses made in business IT on several fronts.

In the world of sports, more teams invested in outfitting their teams and venues with technology, including beefed up wireless networks, tablet-based playbooks and customized mobile apps aimed at boosting the digital experience for fans. On the networking side, software-defined networking gained more steam and in the startup world, the nation's capital made a big splash with the launch of the Challenge Cup, Washington D.C.-based incubator 1776's global startup competition .
